These are the Civil Parishes where Fannings, Fannins and Darmodys are listed in Griffith’s Valuations. There is detailed information on individual entries in Griffith’s Valuations in the post “Fanning/Fannin/Darmody in Griffith’s Valuation” 3/21/09.
They are, going clockwise from the top,: Roscrea, Bourney, Killavinoge, Templeree, Loughmoe West, Loughmoe East, Moyne, Rahelty, Twomileborris, Ballymureen, Moycarkey, Fertiana, Holycross, Thurles, Inch, Glenkeen, Drom, Templemore.
I located this tombstone in Cairo Illinois of Owen Darmody who died in 1872 at age 22.
it is difficult to read, but I think the last two lines are “Parish, Co. Tipperary Ireland.” I know my great grandfather Thomas Darmody left Tipperary about 1860 for Boston, then moved to Cairo Illinois about 1866, died there in 1909. Perhaps Owen was Thomas’s brother. I am Thomas’s great grandson, his son George was my father Phillip’s, father. i put the picture in the link. perhaps the Illinois Darmodys are related or were neighbors to the Fannings.
Hi Robert,
I have not had much luck tracking down my Darmodys. My ggggrandfather Edward Fanning married Johanna Darmody in 1808 but her parents names were not listed. She lived in Racecourse Thurles and is no doubt related to Owen Darmody. It is not such a common surname but it has me beat. However all the Catholic Parish records that are in the National Library in Dublin are being put online for free on 8 July this year!! so I am hoping I can track down my Darmodys. Good luck with your searching and thanks for making contact. Kathleen
any luck?
Hi Robert,
All I know is that my Darmody’s lived in Racecourse in Thurles. No breakthroughs.
