Genealogy of the Fanning Family from Thurles Co Tipperary Ireland
“Sunnyside” was the original homestead of William Patrick Fanning and his wife Catherine Hayes who emigrated from Thurles Co Tipperary Ireland to Victoria on the Enmore in 1841. They spent some time at Werribee before settling here at Bulla north of Melbourne. These photos were taken in in c1867, 1907, c1940 and 2011.

I have found your website by accident looking for old photos of Thurles as some of my ancestors came from there- Lawrence Fanning [1834 – 1907 buried in ESK Qld] and his wife Mary Stapleton. Before coming to Australia in 1858 to Queensland, they went to Guernsey where Johanna 1853 Marie 1855, and John [died on voyage to Australia on Mary Pleasants ship] were born. I think Lawrence’s parents were Laurence Fanning and Bridget Lubey. A m wondering if there is a connection to your Fannings. A Catherine Fanning sponsored Lawrence’s family to Australia.

I have come across your Fanning family but have so far not been able to connect them with mine. It is interesting that a Catherine Fanning sponsored them as my gggrandfather’s wife was Catherine and there were meant to have been a group of relations who came out from Ireland in the 1850s or 1860s and who settled up north, either or both NSW or Qld. So far no one has been able to track these relations down. Do you have any more information on your Thurles ancestors? A townland name? I haven’t come across any Lawrence Fanning & Bridget Lubey or Mary Stapleton connected to our family in Ireland, as yet, that is. If I come across anything I’ll let you know. regards Kathleen

No I didn’t find them on ancestry but I will have a look at Joseph Healy tree.
I came across them in familysearch.org records I think when I first started my research.

I’m afraid the only info on the ship’s immigration records says Thurles as place of birth.
They settled in Laidley Qld and had moved to Esk in Qld by at least 1903. [Electoral rolls] I guess there would have been many Fannings in Thurles and maybe your ancestors and mine were distantly related. I’ll keep searching anyway.

While there were quite a few Fannings in Thurles at that time a lot were related. If you find anything more let me know and I’ll do likewise.
