Darmody and Dermody Family History Co Tipperary Ireland

Searching for information on Judith Darmody who married Edmund Fanning in 1808 in Thurles, Co Tipperary, Ireland. Link to a comprehensive family history site for the Darmody or Dermody surname.

I am searching for information about my gr gr gr grandmother Johanna (Judith or Judy) Darmody. She married Edmond or Edward Fanning in Thurles Parish in 1808. They had ten children. I have been unable to find out anything about her family.

Witnesses at her wedding were Patrick Darmody and Judith MacGrath. She came from the townland of Racecourse in Thurles.

Sponsors for her children were:

20/5/1809 Edm. Callinan and Biddy Fitzpatrick; 23/9/1810 Andrew Callinan and Ellen Kirwan; 5/4/1812 Pat Fanning and Mary Dunne; 25/11/1813 Michael Fitzpatrick and Jude Fanning; 6/11/1816 Mick Fanning; 20/3/1821 John Callanan and Margaret Fitzpatrick; 17/2/1823 John Nolan and Sally Darmody;  8/11/1824 Philip Darmody and Kitty Nolan; 4/12/1826 John Ryan and Mary Callinan; 30/5/1829 Judith Treacy.

Just came across a really good Darmody Family History site:

It has all the references to Darmodys and Dermodys in Griffiths Valuations, in Arrival lists for Victoria and NSW, in the Victorian Birth Index 1855-1905, Marriage Index 1838-1905, Death Index 1835-1913 and in the IGI index for Tipperary

  1. Hi Kathleen,

Just came upon your website and noticed that the name, date, and location are similar to my family. My ggg grandfather, Patrick Dermody, was from Nenagh, Tipperary (near Thurles). He married and had five children (1811, 1813, 1815, 1818 and 1822). There may have been others, but I know of these five. The family immigrated to Canada between 1822 and 1832.

I wonder if it might be possible that there is a link between your ggg grandmother and my ggg grandfather – perhaps siblings or cousins – or perhaps no connection. But, thought it worth a try!

    1. Hi Cath,
I have had a lot of trouble finding reliable info on my Darmody ancestors. But I have traced them to Thurles town itself.

I am Australian and although I visited Tipperary last year, not being from the area I am unsure as to the geography. But my impression is that Nenagh is or was a long way from Thurles and so unlikely that your Dermodys are connected. I could be wrong with people travelling to markets. So far I haven’t come across any of my relations in Nenagh. But it is possible. I’m hoping to eventually be able to find my ggg grandmother, Johanna Darmody’s ,parents and siblings.

Good luck with your search and let me know if you find a connection.

  2. Hi Kathleen!

Just wondered if you had completed a dna test? Do you have a Gedmatch kit number?
All of these names, Appear in my Darmody records – Fitzpatricks, McGrath’s,

    1. Hi Caite,
My brother did a DNA test with FTDNA. As far as I know Gedmatch doesn’t take Y-DNA tests. I did the Ancestry DNA test and I have just uploaded it to Gedmatch. Kit number A345325. Will check out if I can upload my brother’s FTDNA.
Do you know where abouts your Darmodys lived in Co Tipperary?
